A racially insensitive video posted on TikTok has resulted in consequences for four students.

A video was posted earlier this week on social media mocking the terrible murder of George Floyd by students at White Knoll High School in Lexington, South Carolina.

In the 10-second video, students are seen lying on the ground with their hands behind their backs as another student dressed as a cop approaches them and places one knee on their neck. Suddenly, the video ends, as the student who was mocking Floyd shakes while the camera pans away.

Negative comments were received about the clip, and a Change.org petition was started to force the school to respond. An email sent by the school to parents in response to the backlash acknowledged the “unacceptable and disturbing actions” by the students. The school informed parents that the students involved would be suspended for the remainder of the 2021–2022 school year. In accordance with the message, teens will also be prohibited from playing athletics and participating in extracurricular activities.

In a statement, Principal Ted Daughtrey said that racism undermines a person’s value. “There is no place for racism in our schools, communities, or hearts,” he said in a statement.

Dr. Greg Little, the Lexington County superintendent, added, “We strongly condemn the actions of these students.” He explained, “We will not tolerate racism of any kind by our students or employees, and it will be dealt with as soon as possible.”

A number of counseling alternatives, including a call-in helpline, are being offered at White Knoll High School by the Lexington County Community Mental Health Center to any students affected by the TikTok video.

In Daughtery’s statement, she noted that White Knoll High’s staff and students have been actively working towards bringing people together for quite some time. However, this incident illustrates the need for further progress. In order for our students and staff to participate in the learning process, we reaffirm our commitment to mutual respect.”
