In a 2011 email to DeMaurice Smith, the executive director of the NFL Players Association, Las Vegas Raiders coach believes that Smith’s race was a big part of his success.

Gruden reportedly wrote “Think dumboriss Smith has lips the size of Michelin tires” in the Wall Street Journal in reference to his facial features. The NFL quickly issued a statement rebuking the comments after the email was made public on Friday (Oct. 8). In an email sent by Gruden, he disparaged DeMaurice Smith, McCarthy said. “That’s appalling, abhorrent, and totally against what the NFL stands for,” McCarthy added. The statement is condemned and we apologize for any harm it may cause to anyone or to Mr. Smith.”

Gruden’s email from the lockout, written during the lockout, seems to contradict Raiders owner Mark Davis’ comment.

Jon Gruden sent DeMaurice Smith an email 10 years ago while he was working for ESPN. The content of that email is disturbing and contrary to what the Raiders stand for,” said Davis. “For the first time a reporter alerted us to the email yesterday evening, and we are reviewing it, along with the other materials the NFL has provided today. The matter is being discussed with Coach Gruden, and no further comment is planned at this time.”

Gruden apologized for the email on Friday, despite still being a broadcaster at the time. «I just want to apologize,» he said. According to Smith, liars have rubber lips, but he doesn’t consider him to be one. “He’s not dumb,” he said. His response to the Journal was, “I don’t believe he’s lying.” „I have no racial prejudice, and I have proven this for more than 50 years.”

Although Smith believes that this will not be his last encounter with racism, he believes it is not out of the question. He said racism originated from the fact that he is at the same table as them and that they do not believe someone with my kind of appearance belongs.
