The Central Park Karen, aka Amy Cooper, remains solidly behind her call to the police after last year’s encounter with a Black birdwatcher. The white woman opened up to Bari Weiss in a recent episode of the “Honestly” podcast about her experience with Christian Cooper to get to 911.

In one hand, he is holding dog treats, and in the other hand, a bike helmet. I think, “Oh, my God, is this guy going to lure my dog over so he can assault him with his helmet?”?”, she replied. When I get to over there, am I going to get hit by that helmet?”

“Suddenly I hear this victimized voice saying, ‘Don’t come near me.'” I almost felt like he was afraid of me,” Karen told Central Park. “I find that even more frightening now since you’ve gone from screaming at me to speaking to me verbally. It used to be consistent but now everything has changed.”

According to her, she decided to call the police after considering all of her options. It didn’t seem like I had another option as a woman in a park alone. “I’m wondering what that means, you know? Does that mean I am being attacked physically? Do you mean my dog? I mean, what will he do?”

The viral video of the incident, which took place on May 25, 2020, begins with birdwatching Cooper asking Central Park Karen to leash her dog because they were in the area of the park where leashes were required. Her request for him not to film her is met with his warning to stay away. Soon after, she pulls out her phone, calls law enforcement, and reports that the birdwatcher assaulted both her and her dog.

Another phone call, which wasn’t observed on camera, reported that the woman had been assaulted in the park by the Black man. The police discovered that Ms. Cooper had lied when they arrived at the scene, and she was reported for filing a false police report. Following her apology and completing a few therapy sessions centered around racial equity, the charge was dropped.
