Ta’Neasha Chappell, of Louisville, died at an Indiana jail while in custody. Her family is on a quest for answers and has hired a well-established legal team to assist them in learning more about her death. The Louisville Courier Journal reports that the 23-year-old’s family is seeking help from Sam Aguiar, Lonita Baker and Ben Crump – the lawyers representing Breonna Taylor.

Ta’Neasha Chappell’s family has been granted the privilege of seeking justice and truth on the part of our team, Aguiar said in a statement on Wednesday (July 21). More will follow as soon as possible.”

Chappell was being held at the Jackson County Jail after she was accused of stealing clothing from a Polo Ralph Lauren store and then leading a high-speed pursuit.

Her last breath came at the Schneck Memorial Hospital after almost a month in custody. On Thursday (15 July), the 23-year-old was transferred to the hospital as a result of vomiting and high temperatures. Almost two hours after she passed away, her family learned of her death.

Ronesha Murrell, Chiappell’s sister, says the 23-year-old complained about problems with staff and inmates. Her life was threatened once when she found a noose in her bed. She appeared to be in better shape just two weeks before she passed away.

Police have shared “very little” information about Chappell’s death, Murrell said, adding that jail officials have been non-responsive. There is an investigation underway into what happened. State police are not commenting on the matter pending the results of autopsy on the 23-year-old.

State police spokesman said there would be no additional statements until investigators receive the toxicology and autopsy results.
