A new name for the Cleveland Indians has been revealed after years of controversy. Tom Hanks narrated a Twitter video released on Wednesday (July 23) in which the Major League Baseball team announced they would be called the Cleveland Guardians.

“Cleveland has always been and always will be an integral part of our identities,” owner Paul Dolan said during a press conference. “This is why we wanted to choose a name that reflects the pride, resiliency and loyalty of Clevelanders. “Guardians” showcases those characteristics that have helped define us while referencing the iconic Guardians of Traffic just outside the ballpark on the Hope Memorial Bridge.”

Clevelanders take great pride in their city, and it is a testament to the way in which we fight together for all those who choose to be part of the Cleveland baseball family, he said. The name Indians will always be a part of our history, but our new name will help to unite our fans and city, as we all have the same name, the Cleveland Guardians.

After announcing they are on their way to renaming the Washington Football Team, the Washington Redskins, announces they are approaching a new name. Many have criticized the names of both sporting teams as being racially offensive.

Red, white and blue will remain Cleveland’s team colors, according to the press statement. The team will start using its new name at the end of the 2021 season. Cleveland’s new “Diamond C” logo will be an evolution of their current “Block C” logo, in which they take inspiration from Cleveland Baseball’s rich history and heritage and use the Guardians’ Fastball as their new logomark.

“This is an exciting time for our franchise, and our players and staff are looking forward to debuting our new look and name in 2022,” Chris Antonetti, President of Baseball Operations, said. Our team looks forward to representing Cleveland as the Guardians. “Our club aims to unify and inspire our wider community.”
