Last month, the body of Jelani Day, a 25-year-old graduate student from Illinois, was identified. Her body was buried on Tuesday (Oct. 19). CNN reports that Civil Rights leader Rev. Jesse Jackson attended a funeral service in Danville, Illinois for the young man. Around 30 people attended the service.

I just saw one of the best blessings that God bestowed on me go to the ground, and I will never be able to see him or talk with him again. Jelani’s mother Carmen Bolden Day expressed her sorrow after the funeral, “I don’t even have the words to describe what it’s like.”

“I do not understand why I am burying Jelani. There is no closure for me since I have no idea what happened to Jelani,” she continued.

Jelani’s vehicle was discovered one day later in Peru, Illinois, after he was reported missing in Bloomington, Illinois on Aug. 25. An initial investigation of the student on Aug. 26 was inconclusive, according to Bloomington police officer John Fermon.

The body was identified as Jelani almost three weeks after it was discovered floating in the Illinois River. The tip led investigators to the body on Sept. 4; a tip led to the discovery. The reason for his death is not yet known, pending the outcome of the police investigation.

Jelani’s funeral is approaching as his family continues to seek explanations for his death and absence. Despite conflicting autopsy findings, one private forensic physician declared that the young man’s organs were “totally liquified.”

In a later statement, Jelani’s mother clarified the two autopsies had revealed conflicting results, saying she does not believe him to be an organ harvesting victim.

She said, however, that her son did not immerse himself in a river. The goal and purpose of my quest is to discover what happened to my son and identify those responsible.

Due to the contradictory findings, Jelani’s siblings previously requested a third autopsy.

It has been reported by CNN that Rev. Jackson has supported the family in its legal quest. He urged the FBI and the Department of Justice to “conduct a thorough investigation” since this is reminiscent of the case of Emmett Till, an African American teen who was kidnapped, tortured, and lynched in 1955. “I’m committed to helping her,” Jackson said.
