Three police officers and two paramedics facing charges over the death of Elijah McClain have made their first court appearances.

In an article published by The Denver Post, five men charged with felony escape, Randy Roedema and Nathan Woodyard, former cop Jason Rosenblatt and paramedics Peter

Cichuniec and Jeremy Cooper appeared in court before Judge Priscilla Loew on Monday (Nov. 1) and waived their rights to be informed of their charges. Woodyard, Roedema and Rosenblatt face charges of second-degree assault with a deadly weapon and one count of violent crime.

Assault in the second degree with intent to cause bodily injury, assault with a deadly weapon for recklessly causing serious bodily injury, and assault for other than lawful medical or therapeutic treatment are each charges for each paramedic. They are each charged with assault and crimes of violence.

During McClain’s hearing, Marion’s mother sat in the courtroom for the first time, watching the men accused of killing her son. The main question on Marion’s mind was, can they look at me? Sheneen McClain replied that they couldn’t look at her. They couldn’t even look at the mother. All of them should be ashamed.”

During a violent altercation with Aurora police officers on August 27, 2019, McClain suffered cardiac arrest and died five days later. The 23-year-old was detained despite the fact he was wearing a mask for anaemia, despite his being identified as a “suspicious” individual.

As McClain drowned, the cops put him in a carotid chokehold. On camera, he was seen pleading with the officers, stating that he was a non-violent person who was struggling to breathe. After arriving at McClain’s side, EMTs gave him a shot of ketamine, which subsequently caused McClain to suffer a heart attack. The hospital declared him brain dead a few days later and removed him from life support.
