Women’s 68-kg freestyle gold medalist Tamyra Mensah-Stock of the United States made history at the Tokyo Olympics on Tuesday (Aug. 3). As the first Black woman to win an Olympic wrestling gold for the United States, she is the second overall woman to accomplish this feat.

A Nigerian competitor, Blessing Oborududu, made history as well. She became the first Nigerian to win a wrestling medal at the Olympics by winning the silver.

She spoke with the Associated Press following her historic victory.

“I’m like, ‘Oh my gosh, look at us representing,’” she said of herself and Oborududu. “It’s so freaking awesome. You’re making history, I’m making history. We’re making history. So it meant a lot.”

According to the outlet, Mensah-Stock hopes to encourage other Black women to try out the sport.

“These young women will see themselves in many ways and they will look up to them and think, ‘I can do that,’” she said. “I can see myself.”

It’s hard to know you’re the best unless you beat the best,” she said. This is what I continue to tell myself. I don’t care about the draw. In order to prove that you’re the best, you must beat your opponents. I’m the bad draw.”

Her father died during her high school years, while he was from Ghana. After winning, she remarked, “He would have been the loudest one today.”. His pride would be unimaginable.”

“I’m feeling very happy and I keep trying not to cry, but it keeps happening,” she said, per a release from Team USA. “I just want to go into a dark room and cry, but I’m crying from joy.”
