In a release issued on Monday (Oct. 25), the LaSalle County Coroner’s Office said that Jelani Day drowned. Despite this, a number of questions remain concerning the 25-year-old’s death and disappearance.

Richard Ploch, LaSalle County coroner, revealed on Monday that Day drowned but did not state how he entered the Illinois River.

In the statement, the statement added that autopsy tests did not reveal a specific positive finding in drowning cases. An individual found dead in a body of water is considered to have drowned, when there is supporting evidence that supports the diagnosis.

Last seen at his college campus in Bloomington, Illinois, students from Illinois State University have been missing since Aug. 24. Nevertheless, his body was later discovered in the Illinois River and his car was found two days later in Peru, Illinois.

Day is not believed to have been intoxicated or injured prior to his death, according to the coroner’s report. According to reports, there was no evidence of assault, altercation or strangulation, as well as no “pre-death injuries,” such as gunshot wounds or injuries resulting from “sharp, blunt” objects.

In spite of the findings, Day’s mother Carmen Bolden Day believes there was foul play involved in his death.

My son claimed to have done something to himself in that narrative. “He didn’t,” she replied. My son was harmed by someone, and they will be held accountable for their actions.”

As well as disputing the coroner’s findings, Rev. Jesse Jackson Jr., who has been in contact with Dr. Day’s family throughout the case, has also spoken out.

“I do not think so. That is a suicidal statement. “We do not feel so,” he responded. “The Attorney General and the Department of Justice must be notified.”

Former Attorney General Jackson called for a “thorough” investigation of the incident by the Department of Justice. Police and the FBI are currently investigating Day’s death and disappearance.
