Several transgender rights protesters were arrested at Wi Spa in Los Angeles’ Koreatown neighborhood Saturday (July 17), according to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD).

Reports from LA’s KTLA news outlet state the protesters were at the spa showing support for its trans-inclusive policy, under which trans women can use women’s facilities. One of our customers shared a video on Instagram earlier this month of her experience with the management at Wi Spa. The woman in the video appears visibly upset by what she claims occurred when a male patron showed his genitals to young girls while he was in his clothes. The patron who was referred to by the woman identifies as female, as well.

In the now viral video, a woman says, “He is a man.”. “He is not a female. They, as well as all the other women down there who just witnessed it, are deeply offended. You sided with him.”

Following the incident, LGBTQ protesters clashed with counter-protesters and police. Los Angeles Police Det. Meghan Aguilar said smoke bombs and other projectiles were hurled at officers during the assembly, which was declared an unlawful assembly on Saturday (July 17).

A few minutes after 11 a.m. the LAPD began ordering protestors to leave. Los Angeles police tweeted that protest zones have been established at all corners except the southwest corner of Wilshire Blvd and Rampart Blvd.

Despite most demonstrators departing at their own volition, countless others remained and refused to leave. A video shared on social media shows police riot gear and 40-millimeter foam projectiles being fired at protesters. According to the LAPD, they were arrested for “failure to disperse.” LAPD reported that several weapons were found on the ground in the area where the arrests took place, including pepper spray, knives, and mace. A few minor injuries have been reported, but no serious ones.
